Description:
Managing Your Project Manager: A Survivor's Guide for Data Professionals
(Presentation Format)

[Power Point]
"As we are asked to do more with less, project pressures can lead
to compromises, shortcuts, and other streamlining techniques. These
shortcuts influence the quality and completeness of data management
deliverables, yet most project managers have only a high-level understanding
of what we do and what we require to do it. How will you respond
when your project manager asks you how long it will take, how much
will it cost, and how your efforts should be reflected in the project
plan? This highly interactive (and sometimes irreverent) discussion
will include:
- Warning Signs: When project pressures influence you ability deliver
- Getting It Right: Questions to ask when estimating data management
activities
- Survival Tips: Making the best of more for less
- Resources: Where to turn for other survival tips"
Data Modeling Contentious Issues (Group Participation)

| [Power Point]
I have given this presentation at the DAMA International conference,
DAMA Europe, DAMA Australia as well as several DAMA chapters. It
is extremely popular and is updated with new issues and positions.
Even if members have attended this before, it is a new session due
to the changing nature of our profession and the variety of attendees.
“How are data management professionals supposed to promote standards
and models when we can’t agree with other data professionals when
it comes to data modeling? Or do we need to agree? Is there a right
answer for all projects? This presentation will summarise the most
contentious data modelling issues discussed on the Data Modelling
List, a 5000+ subscriber discussion group. This highly interactive
and fun session will cover topics such as:
- Modelling of Party and Party Roles
- Surrogate Keys versus Natural Keys
- Who Has the Final Say on the Data Model
- What's Logical and What's Physical
- Are Classwords Dead?
- Standardized/Universal Data Models
- Is that One 'L' or Two?
Come prepared to share you opinions and topics for discussion.”
