Oftentimes due to timelines or lack of understanding,
a Logical Data Model is the forgotten artifact. This presentation
will stress the importance of the Logical Data Model as well as
identify the strengths needed for a data modeler. Topics that will
be discussed are: What is a Logical Data Model? What are some of
the benefits of having a Logical Data Model? When should a logical
data modeler be involved? What skills, traits and background make
for a good data modeler? What are the inputs for integrating the
business information? What are the inputs for model creation?
Missy Wittmann is an Information Modeling Senior
Engineer at American Family Insurance. Missy has worked in the data
modeling field for over ten years in various roles. She started
out as a business partner on a project that did some data modeling
and enjoyed the process so much that she changed career paths. Missy
has facilitated projects for Business Modeling, Logical and Physical
Data Modeling. Most recently she has been participating in projects
that are creating XML Schema's. Data Modeling is an exciting place
to be in the world of technology. No matter what technology is being
used to get the end result, we always need our blue-print!

The session describes the information products
used when integrating applications using Service-oriented architecture
(SOA). Learning’s will be shared in architecting the integration
of an ERP suite to a number of mature point solutions following
SOA to orchestrate the information exchange. Focus will be on: Enterprise
Business Objects - EBO Enterprise Business Messages - EBM Application
Business Messages - ABM Practical examples of each information product
will be presented in coordination with existing methods to specify:
Enterprise Common Vocabulary, Business Information, Model of Vital
Data, Application Models, Data Warehouse/Mart Models, and Conversion/Staging
Models. You will learn how to map the EBO, EBM and ABM metadata
with these information products to provide a valuable inventory
of data and its lineage across in-house and purchased solutions.
Through evolution, few variances of information will remain as more
services adopt the actual EBO and EBM, reducing the amount of unique
ABMs.
Jim has focused on advancing the quality, value
and business usage of his company’s information. Recently, Jim has
played a major role in architecting the integration of an ERP with
a number of internal developed applications. Jim spends much of
his time working on Business Process Improvement, Information Stewardship,
Master Data Management and promoting “Information as an Asset”.
Jim is the current President of the Wisconsin DAMA Chapter and VP
of Chapter Services for DAMA International. For five years he was
an Adjunct Faculty of Business Administration for Saint Norbert
College - teaching classes in Computer Applications in Business.
