We're living in a time of tremendous technological change when
three converging trends are enabling the creation of a new generation
of revolutionary enterprise applications. First, the ubiquitous
"Web 2.0". With rich, desktop-like user interfaces now possible
via the web browser, a major hurdle to deploying applications requiring
complex user interactions and visualizations has been overcome.
Additionally, the collaborative capabilities of a web-deployed application
offers proven organizational productivity enhancements. Second,
software as a service (SaaS). The tremendous growth of SaaS over
the last two years is a testament to the real value the model offers
to both providers and users, but integration and customization hurdles
are real and must be addressed. Third, cloud computing. The fantastic
implications of the transition to utility enterprise computing are
particularly well suited to applications which require significant
computational resources for relatively short periods of time (or
"bursts"), such as data mining. Join Matt Redlon for an interactive
review and discussion of these powerful, converging trends and a
view on the applications they will enable.
