Meeting Topic: XML: It's Impact on Data Management, Administration
and Architecture
XML is to data what Java is to programming languages – so how do
we take advantage of its capabilities?
We have perhaps witnessed the excitement of the possibility of
developing application programs using a single programming language
that will run on multiple platforms. “Write it once and run the
application anywhere” has been the rallying cry.
Those of us concerned with data challenges (such as delivery, integration,
quality, interchange, etc.) now have access to a technology that
allows us to attack these problems in a somewhat similar manner
– Extensible Markup Language (XML). XML technologies enable data
personnel to wrap and deliver organizational data that is described
with accompanying metadata. By transmitting the metadata with the
data – a number of data challenges may be address-ed effectively
by architecting classes of problem solutions instead of more expensive
point-to-point, one-time solutions. More...

Dr. Peter H. Aiken
Biography
Dr. Peter H. Aiken is an award-winning, internationally recognized
thought leader in the area of organizational data architecture and
engineering. As a practicing data manager, consultant, author and
researcher, he has been actively studying these and related areas
for more than twenty-five years. His sixth book is titled XML in
Data Management and is co-authored with David Allen. He has held
leadership positions with the US Department of Defense and consulted
with more than 50 organizations in 14 different counties. His achievements
have resulted in recognition as one of 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals
of the 21st Century and bibliographic entries in Who's Who in Science
and Engineering, Who's Who in American Education and other recognitions.
His entertaining but clear and concise insights make him a sought
after speaker, lecturer and consultant. He is an Associate Professor
in Virginia Commonwealth University's Information Systems Department
and the Founding Director of Data Blueprint, Inc. Peter is the recipient
of the 2001 DAMA International Individual Achievement Award He has
served as an advisor to DAMA International and is currently VP of
Communications for DAMA International. He also serves as an advisor
o the Meta-Data Professional Organization.
